Johnny Chew's

Heritage, not trends.

A neighborhood beer & wine bar opening soon on the same corner in Old Town Scottsdale that's been pouring drinks and holding stories since 1929.

The Experience

A proper neighborhood bar

No gimmicks, no trends, just local beers and wine, good music, a good seat, and people worth talking to.

Local Beer

Rotating regional and Arizona taps alongside the reliable classics.

Curated Wine

A thoughtful list of reds and whites by the glass or bottle.

Neighborhood Spirit

Old Town roots — proud to be part of the community, not just on the block.

A Seat With Some History

Same corner, since 1929

Johnny Chew's takes its name — and its address — from one of Old Town Scottsdale's original gathering spots.

1923

Johnny Rose's Pool Hall

A one-stop Old Town institution at this corner — "Fancy Groceries, Shoe Repairing, Barber Shop, Pool Hall, Ice Cream, Confectionary, and Soft Drinks," according to its own sign.

1929

The Song family puts down roots

J. Chew Song purchases the property, the same year the first Saba's opened just down the road — two Old Town families whose histories would run side by side for generations.

Early 1980s

J. Chew & Co. opens

Jack Song opens a bar and restaurant under the family name at 7320 Scottsdale Mall — the very address Johnny Chew's calls home today.

Late 1990s – 2009

New names, same corner

After J. Chew & Co. closed, the space carried on under new ownership as Brackin's Bar, then reopened in 2009 as The Old Town Tavern.

Today

Johnny Chew's

A new chapter at the same address, built on the same idea that's been true since 1923: a good corner bar is worth holding onto.

Sourced from Scottsdale historical accounts of Johnny Rose's Pool Hall, the Song family & J. Chew & Co., and Old Town Scottsdale's Mexican Imports store — details welcome for correction as we settle into the neighborhood.
